Taeguek Poomse

"Taeguek" represents the most profound Oriental philosophy from which Oriental philosophical views on the world, cosmos and life are derived. "Tae" means bigness, while “Guek” means eternity, thus it is something that contains the essence of everything.

Taeguek 1: Il Jang Symbol: Keon View
The symbol "Keon" represents heaven and light and is one of the eight symbols in the Taeguek Symbol in the above corners. It symbolizes the beginning of creation and is thus chosen as the first poomse learned in Taekwondo. This poomse is practiced by the 9th Gup trainee, and is required for your yellow belt test.
     
Taeguek 2: Ee Jang Symbol: Tae View
The symbol "Tae" represents joy. This is the state in which one’s mind is kept firm and appears gentle, so that smile and virtue prevail. This poomse is practiced by the 8th Gup decided, and is required for testing for your first green stripe.
     
Taeguek 3: Sam Jang Symbol: Ri View
The symbol "Ri" represents fire and the sun. The difference between man and animal is that man knows how to use fire; it gives light, warmth, and hope. Accordingly, there is a variety of hand, feet and body actions successfully used in defense. This poomse is practiced by the decided 7th Gup trainee, and is required for your second green stripe.
     
Taeguek 4: Sah Jang Symbol: Jin View
The symbol "Jin" represents thunder meaning great power and dignity. Thunder and lightning are the objects of fear and trembling, the principle of Jin is to act calmly and bravely even in the face of danger and fear; the blue sky will appear again. You need to maintain body balance to perform this poomse. This poomse is practiced by the recommended 5th Gup. It will be required for your first blue stripe.
     
Taeguek 5: Oh Jang Symbol: Seon View
The symbol "Seon" represents the wind. Wind symbolizes a humble state of mind. Actions can be as gentle as a spring breeze, or as strong as a forceful storm. This poomse is practiced by recommended 4th Gup. It will be required for your blue belt.
     
Taeguek 6: Yook Jang Symbol: Gam View
The symbol "Gam" represents water, meaning continues flow and softness. This principle teaches we can overcome difficulties and hardships if we go forward with self confidence. This poomse is practiced by recommended 3rd, and is required for your second red stripe.
     
Taeguek 7: Chil Jang Symbol: Gan View
The symbol "Gan" represents a mountain(top stop). Moving and stopping should match with time in order to achieve things. Amountain never moves. Man must learn the stability of a mountain and not to act in a hasty manner. This principle is well adapted to Taekwondo. Though fast actions seem fine we should know where and when to stop. This poomse is practiced by recommended 2nd and is required for your red belt.
     
Taeguek 8: Pal Jang Symbol: Gon View
The symbol "Gon" represents Yin and earth. The earth is the source of life. The earth is where the creative force of heaven is embodied. It also signifies the root and settelment, the beginning and the end. The 8th Jang is the last round of training and a stepping stone to the way of the Dan-holder. Here all fundamental actions should be reviewed and improved upon. This poomse is practiced by recommended 1st and is required for your second black stripe.
